Chapter Twelve

Sharon shook her fist at JJ. “How did you forget to mention he was coming? I’ll have to get dressed now because I can hardly entertain the doctor dressed like this.” Despite the warm summer evening, Sharon was wearing a teddy bear dressing gown over her nightie.

“I meant to, then we had the pickled onion saga and it escaped my mind. Davie,” he shouted up the stairs, “remind me tomorrow that we need to buy pickled onions.” JJ rolled his eyes, then winked at Sharon. “You could always go to bed with a good book. It’s Friday. No work to do for next week with the holidays fast approaching. Or you could binge watch the soaps. You could have a field day.”

“Yes, like that’s going to happen. I’m still in shock. I want the nitty-gritty and from the horse’s mouth. Not from someone in the staff room or even you. Amber and Dr Stephen Bentley. Wow. How did it even get started?”

JJ hadn’t told her about the dating site yet, and he pondered if he should. Davie removed the choice as he came back downstairs.

“What are we talking about, the doc’s affair? Online, Sharon. That seems to be where she hooked up with all of them. Are we going to sit in the garden? It’s a lovely evening.”

Sharon gave a squeak. “A dating site! JJ, why didn’t you tell me that at the beginning? I am certainly not skulking up to the bedroom now. And, yes, Davie, let’s sit in the garden. You two move the table further up, so we can keep an eye out for prying neighbours. I’ll grab a T-shirt and some shorts. We have no wine in. Should we have something? We need to offer him a drink.”

“Sharon, he’s coming here to be questioned, not entertained. You can offer him a cup of tea,” JJ replied. “Come on, Davie. We should do as instructed while she takes the time to calm down.”

As they moved the furniture further up the garden, Davie asked, “Can I be nosey? Why don’t you have alcohol in the house? Is it allowed? What I’m trying to say—”

“…Is, which one of you has a problem? The answer is me. I never know when to stop. When I drink I get nightmares. Wake the entire street up type of nightmares, and the hangover lasts about two days. Sharon has never been a big drinker, so we’ve stopped, well as near as damn it. She lost a few pounds, I lost a lot of headaches. Yes, I have a pint of Guinness occasionally, but I can keep that to one. I’m not an alcoholic. I don’t think so anyway. More of a teenager who can’t handle booze but doesn’t realise that until it’s too late.”

“What sort of nightmares?” Davie asked.

“Do you ever have a normal conversation? You know, looks like rain, or the price of…Oh no, what’s she got there?”

JJ pointed down the garden, and Davie turned to look. Sharon was carrying a stacked tray and had a tablecloth over her arm.
